5 Ways To Keep Your Child Busy Indoors

Most of us dread summer and not without enough reasons—the heat, sweat, and a perpetual tiredness is not something we like to live with. But it gets worse especially for a young energetic child who can’t step outdoors because of the weather and is cooped up and bored indoors. But we don’t need to plop her in front of the TV either. Here are a few suggestions on how to pass time on a hot, summer afternoon with your child.
Board games
This is perhaps one of the best ways to keep a child occupied. Get age-appropriate board games for her. for eg: ludo and snakes and ladders for a younger one, while chess, Othello, and monopoly for an older child. She can play the game with you or you could invite a friend over. Toddlers too can have fun with games such as matching the tiles or card games.
Make it craft-and-art afternoons
Stock your child’s room with all sorts of art and craft material you can find—attractive papers, stickers, stencils, modelling clay (as per age group), highlighters, markers, recycled material, colors, and large sheets of paper and let her have a go at it. You can leave her to her own devices or look up for ideas, and suggest it to her. Older children can also be given vegetables or fruits to cut out shapes from or egg shells and different kinds of uncooked lentils and beans to make collages. Don’t forget to reward their attempts.
Cook something together
The long days leave us feeling hungry so why not have your eager child pitch in a cooking spree. Whip up cakes together or think up of a fruit salad, some cookies, or even an oriental snack that can be served up in the evening.
Play make-believe games
Most young children, in the age groups of 2-6 love to play with dolls, pretend to be a teacher, or an army man and play make believe games. These games develop imagination and communication skills in a child. Prompt and encourage your child to do the same. Set up a tent in the house, or allow her to move furniture around to make a fort, give her quilts and pillows and make a hurdle path and let her have fun trying to dodge some imaginary snow balls.
Plan a game with a deadline
Buy a puzzle that will require days to get completed such as a world map with 300-400 pieces and start on it together with the child. Gradually, once the child is hooked on, step back and encourage her to spend some time in the afternoon and work on it. This will take care of atleast a few afternoons. You can also do something similar with books. Buy two books together—one for yourself and one for the child, and sit back and read it together in the afternoon.
Once your child gets a hang of these, she may actually start preferring spending time with you, doing all these fun activities than lounging around just watching the TV. On your part, you could make a calendar at the start of the week so that you don’t run out of ideas either.
